Am 11. Februar 1979 fand im Iran ein bewaffneter Aufstand statt, bei dem die Guerilla Organisation der Volksfedayin Iran (OIPFG) eine entscheidende Rolle spielte. Dieser Aufstand verhinderte, dass die Übertragung der Macht von einer Konterrevolution zur anderen friedlich und ungestört nicht stattfinden konnte. In den darauffolgenden zwei Jahren nach dem Aufstand war ein heftiger Kampf zwischen Revolution und Konterrevolution im Gange.

Die Schah-Diktatur war durch absolute Rechtlosigkeit, die Unterdrückung demokratischer Rechte und politischer Freiheiten gekennzeichnet. Jegliche Form des Protestes wurde brutal unterdrückt. Vor etwa einem Jahr wurde im Iran offiziell die Existenz von Corona-Virus bestätigt, nachdem zwei Monate versucht wurde, das zu vertuschen und möglist geheimzuhalten. Am 19. Februar 2020 wurden 2 Todesfälle im Zusammenhang mit Covid-19 zugegeben, während noch mindestens im Januar Ärzte und medizinisches Personal davor gewarnt hatten.
