Human shields in reactionary wars
In the fourth week of the war between Iran, Israel, and the United States, civilians are increasingly exposed to deadly attacks. The people of Iran lack basic protection and shelters. They are also deliberately turned into human shields by the Islamic Republic.
In reactionary wars, human life loses value. Both sides use extreme violence to achieve their goals. The use of human shields has become a common tactic. Although this practice has a long history, it has been condemned in modern times. It is prohibited under the Geneva Conventions. However, in recent years, especially under the banner of the “war on terror,” these rules have been weakened. Military forces are now more willing to attack areas where civilians are present. One side uses civilians as shields. The other attacks those same areas.
The Islamic Republic uses different methods to involve civilians in the war. It does this to preserve its own survival. Civilians are targeted by U.S. and Israeli bombings. Cities, residential areas, hospitals, and infrastructure are hit. At the same time, the regime exposes civilians to danger by placing military sites near populated areas.
The killing of students in Minab illustrates this situation. The attack was carried out by the United States. However, the presence of military facilities near a school was not accidental. Schools and residential areas are used as cover for military installations. This increases the risk for civilians. Hospitals are also used for military purposes. Reports indicate that members of the Revolutionary Guards have been present in medical centers. These places are used for meetings and operations. Similar practices were reported during past protests. Political prisoners face extreme danger. They are trapped in prisons during bombardments. They are also at risk of execution and increased repression. The use of prisoners as human shields is a known tactic of repressive regimes.
The Islamic Republic has always relied on repression and violence. This policy continues during the war. Public places such as schools, hospitals, and stadiums are turned into military sites. Civilians are used as shields. Even children are exposed to danger.
This war is not the war of the people, workers, and oppressed in Iran. People must organize locally. Neighborhood committees can help with support, communication, and exposure of these practices. Collective action can reduce risks and protect civilian lives.
