Since this analysis and political position also remain valid regarding the current reactionary war, a summary of this article is presented here.

Reactionary War and the Alternative of Revolution

Wars are the product of class-based societies throughout history, and reactionary, oppressive classes and states resort to war in order to achieve their economic and political objectives, as well as their expansionist and aggressive aims. They place the costs of these wars, namely killing and destruction, intensified exploitation, and the imposition of poverty, on the shoulders of the oppressed masses. The ongoing war between the two reactionary, expansionist, and aggressive states of Israel and the Islamic Republic did not emerge suddenly out of nowhere. Its preconditions had been prepared long beforehand by these two reactionary states. In reality, the conflict between these two states has long been underway؛ directly and indirectly, covertly and overtly, on both political and military levels. It has now escalated into an open, direct, and face-to-face military confrontation.

These two Middle Eastern states are among the most notorious and despised regimes in the world؛ brutal, inhumane, war-mongering, and expansionist. From the very day the state of Israel was established in this region, it has had no function other than waging war, committing aggression, and occupying the territories of other countries, and above all, subjugating the Palestinian people, ruthlessly killing them, and gradually occupying Palestinian lands. During the occupation of Gaza, this regime displayed extreme and naked brutality. Such savagery is unprecedented in the recent century. Even Israel’s traditional allies protested against its criminal actions. The International Criminal Court in The Hague specifically accused the political and military leaders of this regime of genocide.

On the opposing side stands the disgraceful record of the authoritarian capitalist regime of the Islamic Republic. It is a repressive, murderous, expansionist, and war-mongering regime. Since its establishment in Iran, it has had no function other than suppressing and killing the Iranian people. It has also engaged in war-making; an earlier example is the eight-year war. The regime has pursued expansionist and hegemonic ambitions. It has done so by organizing reactionary Islamist groups to achieve regional dominance. It has also maintained ongoing conflict with Israel. Therefore, it is clear that this is a reactionary war between two reactionary states pursuing expansionist and hegemonic objectives. This is not the war of the people of Iran or Israel. It stands in opposition to their interests. For the overwhelming majority of the Iranian people, the reactionary nature of this war is entirely clear. For this reason, people have not risen anywhere in support of this war or taken the side of the Islamic Republic. For now, they have remained silent. They are waiting for the right moment, which will arrive soon. At that moment, they will enter the scene with an independent policy for a decisive struggle. Nevertheless, there are reactionary groups and factions that attempt to conceal and deny the reactionary and aggressive nature of this war on both sides. They issue statements and use propaganda tools. They call on the people to support one side or the other. One group consists of those who, for years, under labels such as reformists, national-religious figures, and religious intellectuals, have defended and preserved the ruling authoritarian capitalist regime. They have participated in the regime’s apparatuses of repression and indoctrination. In this role, they have suppressed and killed the people. Under the banner of followers of the Imam’s line, they played a central role in initiating and continuing the eight-year Iran–Iraq war. They were also responsible for the killing of hundreds of thousands of people. These figures have long been exposed and discredited in the eyes of the Iranian people. Yet they now reappear as academics, cultural figures, and social and political activists. They call on the people to participate in the war in support of the Islamic Republic.

Opposed to these groups are the fascist factions supporting Reza Pahlavi. Their propaganda mouthpiece is the Israeli-based television channel Iran International. They openly defend the racist and aggressive regime of Israel. They portray Israel and the United States as the saviors of the Iranian people. These reactionary groups, led by Reza Pahlavi, praise Israeli bombardments in Iran. They call on their supporters to take to the streets. They urge them to exploit the current situation and, with Israeli military assistance, overthrow the regime.

Some of their supporters abroad celebrate in the streets with every bomb and missile launched by the racist Israeli regime. They wave Israeli flags. Yet all their calls directed at people inside Iran have proven empty. Once again, it has become clear that the monarchist fascist current has no real base among the Iranian people. Even their few supporters have not dared to leave their homes. The Iranian people have shown that they clearly recognize reactionary forces. They also know that no one from outside will bring them freedom and prosperity, and that the bombs of reactionary states are not their salvation.

The reality is that the more overt phase of conflict between the Islamic Republic and the Israeli regime began on October 7, 2023. It started with the Islamic Republic’s proxy forces in Gaza engaging in war with Israel. This war led to the defeat of Hezbollah in Lebanon and other proxy forces. It ultimately culminated in the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria and Israel’s decisive military superiority. These developments created all the conditions necessary for a direct war and a military attack by Israel on Iran. Therefore, it was already clear in advance that, now that Israel had defeated the Islamic Republic’s proxies, the regime itself had been weakened as a result of a series of setbacks.

It was clear that Israel would enter into direct military confrontation in order to finalize its victory and secure its hegemonic dominance. However, before Israel launched its military attack, U.S. imperialism attempted, as Israel’s ally, to force the Islamic Republic into submission through negotiations. As a first step, it demanded the suspension of uranium enrichment and the dismantling of related facilities. It also sought to create the conditions for its other demands, as well as those of the Israeli regime, including missile disarmament and the dissolution of proxy forces. A 60-day deadline was set for reaching an agreement. This deadline was not only an ultimatum, but also served as a political justification for subsequent actions, including a military attack by Israel in the event of failed negotiations. Thus, just one day after the deadline expired, on Friday, June 13, Israel’s military attack on Iran began. Israel carried out targeted assassinations of several military commanders and nuclear scientists. It also bombed military and nuclear facilities. Within a few days, it inflicted heavy military damage on the Islamic Republic.

Although the Islamic Republic was not prepared to confront these attacks, it could not easily surrender in the face of repeated Israeli strikes. Khamenei therefore declared war on Israel through a pre-recorded message. Mutual hostilities continued. During these ten days, both reactionary and war-mongering states engaged in bombardments and missile strikes. What the people received was death, displacement, anxiety, and fear caused by the bombings. They also faced shortages of essential goods and an intensification of repression, especially in Iran. No precise and reliable statistics on casualties and damage have been released. On June 21, the spokesperson of the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Health announced that more than 400 people had been killed and 3,056 injured. However, no distinction was made between military personnel and civilians. It was only stated that most of the victims were civilians.

The Israeli regime has also not published precise figures. However, it has reported fewer than 40 deaths and around 2,000 injuries. Available evidence suggests that neither side currently has any plan other than to continue and escalate the conflict. Trump repeatedly threatens military intervention. The Israeli regime claims it will continue its bombardments until it achieves its objectives, though these objectives remain unclear. In his latest message, Khamenei stated that the “Zionist enemy” must be punished and is being punished. In response to Trump, he also declared that they would not surrender. He warned that “the Americans and those familiar with the policies of this region know that U.S. involvement in this matter will be one hundred percent to its detriment, and it will suffer a blow.”

Despite the propaganda of both sides, negotiations are continuing alongside the war. It appears that the Islamic Republic may be willing to make concessions on nuclear issues. However, it is not willing to grant concessions, especially regarding its missile capabilities. The regime’s foreign minister recently stated: “We will not negotiate with anyone over our missile capabilities.” Under these conditions, it is unlikely that negotiations will succeed. The intensification of contradictions has gone beyond the stage of diplomatic compromise. For now, this war will continue through bombardment and missile strikes.

Neither Israel nor the Islamic Republic can, on their own, alter the current balance of forces. The only option available to Israel is to target infrastructure inside Iran, which has not yet been fully implemented. A shift in the balance of power can only occur through the direct intervention of a third force. In this context, the position of U.S. imperialism is decisive. Since early July, with the bombing of the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities, the United States has officially entered the war on Israel’s side. However, even these attacks have not resolved any of the fundamental conflicts. The Islamic Republic remains in place, and the confrontation continues.

As long as Khamenei and his faction remain in power, the war will continue and intensify. The problem for Western imperialist powers in continuing or escalating the war is that they lack a clear perspective. Even in the event of the collapse of the Islamic Republic, they do not have a reliable bourgeois alternative among opposition groups outside the ruling system. Under these conditions, their preferred option would be internal change within the ruling class. This would involve removing Khamenei and his faction and replacing them with another faction from within the ruling elite, while preserving the state apparatus. However, it remains unclear whether such a shift is possible as long as Khamenei remains in power. Even if such a transformation were to occur, it could lead to serious instability within the ruling structure.

What is the revolutionary alternative to the war? What role do the working class and the oppressed masses of Iran play, and what should they do? Although there appears to be silence and stagnation at the moment, deep dissatisfaction exists within society. This discontent will soon erupt in mass movements. The war will intensify contradictions and deepen the crises within Iranian society. It will make living conditions increasingly unbearable for workers and the oppressed. It will also expand protest and resistance. At the same time, it will deepen divisions within the ruling class and widen the split at the top. There is no doubt that, under current conditions of crisis, any transformation at the top will lead to fragmentation within the state’s repressive apparatus. This will further deepen the political crisis. In such a situation, conditions will become favorable for the growth and escalation of mass struggles. Decades of oppressive rule by the capitalist class and its state have taught the working and oppressed masses of Iran that nothing will change in their favor without change from below and without their own initiative.

The only way out of the disasters created by the existing order is revolution. This means the establishment of a council-based (shura) government and a socialist system. Without such a revolution, it is not possible to end the war or achieve genuine peace. What the ruling classes call “peace” is nothing but a temporary ceasefire. It serves to continue and intensify the exploitation of workers, the oppression of women and men, and the preparation for future wars.

However, this revolution will not occur immediately. It will emerge through the development of conditions during and after the war. The role of the working class will be decisive. It must organize a nationwide strike as a precondition for an armed uprising and the overthrow of the existing order. Efforts must be made to build factory committees, strike committees, and coordinating bodies for strikes. At the same time, as long as the war continues, anti-war committees and mutual aid groups should be formed. These should organize resistance to the war in neighborhoods and other possible spaces, whether openly or clandestinely, depending on conditions.

This article was published on June 22, 2026, in Kar (Labour), the organ of the Organization of Fadaian-aghaliyat, in relation to the 12-day war.
